The Eternal

Having only just gone through a personal Sonic Youth listening revival, I couldn’t be better prepared to comment on their latest album. The Eternal arrived just as I was lamenting the fact that my favorite bands weren’t ‘putting out’ like they did when we first got together. I always thought that I’d heard the best of Sonic Youth many moons ago, but I’m totally stoked to report that they’re back on top. I won’t go into detail about all the tracks on the album, there are plenty of reviews online if you want the songs broken down in obsessive detail. But what I will say is that The Eternal rips straight into it and keeps going. “Antenna” is my pick and made it straight onto my Best-of-Sonic-Youth playlist on the iPod. The Eternal has all the bits of Sonic Youth that I like, from the melodic to the messy, it’s there. In fact, I’d even go so far to say that most of the songs would be right at home on the classic Daydream Nation or Goo albums - big call I know, but this particular fan’s a happy one.
