The Mormons playing the Eagle Rock Music Festival
Kubo, a vintage car and motorcycle enthusiast, Derby Doll, and mechanic, is one of the hottest things on wheels. She gives us a bike tour of Eagle Rock and shows us another way to roll.

Thanks to GIANT for partnering with Theme to give away a great Suede Coasting Bicycle. Click here to see our lucky contest winner!
Brief bio, occupation: I am a Pixel Pusher for packaging in the toy and beauty industry. For fun I play for the L.A. Derby Dolls, a roller derby league located near downtown Los Angeles. I also have a love for vintage cars and motorcycles. And when I have a moment to myself, I love to sleep or go to the gym.

Eat and Drink

Best deal restaurant:
Armon’s Restaurant, 5056 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles.
In Eagle Rock, you can pretty much park anywhere and start from there. But what I recommend, since I usually start off early and need some food to start my day off. I go to Armon’s. It’s cheap and no frills here. There is plenty of metered parking in front or near there around the corner, (you can park in back too). There is always a seat and never a wait. Perfect for the whole family or if you want to just dine alone. They have an interesting blend of American, Mexican & Asian dishes as well. They have anything from a regular 2 egg breakfast, with you choice of any bread or white rice. Nothin’ healthy here. So I usually go for the egg whites and fruit. Hold the bread please!

Favorite cafe:
Swork Coffee, 2160 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles.
Then I need some caffeine, so I get my coffee at Swörk, which is just around the corner from Armon’s, Colorado and Eagle Rock. I love their coffee and great names for the various kinds of coffee such as Truck Driver, and Snap. Also, it’s a great place to take the kids because there is a little toy section where they can play. It’s the best place to work on laptop with free wi-fi too. They even have some cold sorbet treats along with the normal pastries a bagels. It’s a nice place to hang out as there is outdoor seating and it sits on the corner so you have all kinds of traffic and people to watch. After I’ve filled up on caffeine, I wanna go shopping. I like starting off in order, so the closest place I like to check out is the Blue Heeler Store. Cute store and they carry Crumpler bags! My fave. But things are a bit pricey here. They have purses, sheets, bags, jewelry and more. The store is Australian themed so most of the stuff is from there. Its a great place to find more expensive gifts here.

Best bar:
Colorado Wine Company, 2114 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles.
Next I check out Colorado Wine. I like wine and it’s an easy gift when it comes to parties or dinners. I stock up here for some tasty beverages. There is a varied price range and variety. They have wine tastings and it’s wine bar too! Great place to meet other wine snobs or just pretend you are!

Favorite restaurant:
Auntie Em’s Kitchen, 4616 Eagle Rock Blvd.
By this time, I’m most likely hungry, again! So I ride back North, retrace my steps back to past Armon’s to Auntie Em’s for a nice healthy salad and a not so healthy red velvet cupcake. It so rich that I can only eat half. Everything is great there. Sometimes the wait staff may be forgetful though. But well worth the wait!
Shop
Best boutiques:

Best magazine stand:
Paper, 2120 Colorado Blvd. Los Angeles.
On my way North on Colorado, I stop off at Paper. It’s a new store in Eagle Rock that features cool books. some art and neat wrapping paper. The store is small. but it has very unique choice of books, gifts and art.

Best boutiques:
Regeneration, 1649 Colorado Blvd, Eagle Rock.
I check out another place that I just love! I go south on Colorado to see if they got any new things at Regeneration. A super cute shop with recycled items for sale. Regeneration is a wonderful place to find gifts, but whenever I go there to find something for someone else, I end up buying something for me. So be warned, you may splurge on yourself.
Sightsee

All Star Lanes, 4459 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles.
I’m bored so I go further down Eagle Rock Blvd and do a little bowling at All Star Lanes. It’s an old bowling alley that they revamped with electronic scoreboards, and “updated” graphics. Plenty of parking here too. And if you are wanting a drink, there is a decent bar there too. Remember to bring your ID if you want to rent the shoes as they will need that to hold a lane for you. But don’t go on the weekend nights, especially Friday and Sat. It’s filled with teenage kids an old school-bowling leagues. It’s great when no one is around to see your gutter balls.
Best place to people watch:

Coffee Table Eagle Rock, 1958 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles.
After all that strenuous activity, its time to do some people watching. I head back towards Swörk and get back on Colorado going south, (I know it sounds like alot of backtracking) But here is another great place to people watch in Eagle Rock, its called the Coffee Table. They have chairs outside and depending on the time of day you can sit in the sun or on the shady side of the building. Dogs are welcome to hang outside with you too. Here they have more of a variety to munch on, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Healthy and not so healthy. This place also has some cool photos of old Eagle Rock back when it was just dirt roads and farms.
Events

Eagle Rock Farmer’s Market, 2100 Merton Avenue, Los Angeles.
Now for some events that I often frequent in Eagle Rock. Every Friday night from 5-9pm there is a great little Farmer’s Market. Not too huge, but you can find anything from a Elvis Impersonator, fresh vegetables, beautiful flowering plants, and little knick knacks. It’s fun for the kiddies too since there is sometimes a petting zoo set up, and sometimes a pony ride. There are also local vendors selling food, and drink there.

Eagle Rock Festival, 2225 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles.
Every year, Eagle Rock has a Music Festival that is so much fun! If you are into any kind of music, you’ll either find it here or get turned on to new stuff. It’s very indie here. I heard such bands as Dengue Fever and The Mormons, There are street performers (I know, don’t laugh, they are good!) and everywhere you look, there is either a band playing or an art installation. Colorado Blvd is shut down from Eagle Rock Blvd to about a little past Highland View Ave. Well worth checking out, kid friendly, and FREE!
