Sell me some Google
Lately in New York, we’ve been seeing subway cars wrapped in artwork, but not the good kind. Advertising artwork for Google, Discovery channel, Apple’s iPods, etc. have stirred up quite a bit of controversy about what is acceptable artwork on public transportation.
In light of the recent plan to raise subway fares “aimed at plugging a $1.2 billion deficit,” (ED. Can someone explain to me how the f*ck a subway system can lose $1.2 BILLION dollars, given that most trains are standing-room-only for most of the day?) perhaps we could all put some of that money into beautifying some of the crappy subway cars we use everyday?
As a point of reference I thought I’d post some amazing artful train artwork from Japan’s many rail systems that Pinktentacle had put up.

Tadanori Yokoo subway, that’s f*cking awesome. And by f*cking, I mean fucking, as in, FUCKING AWESOME!!
i am not defending the raise in fare nor the amount of money spent on the ny subway. However, a bit of research would reveal that each subway car (not train but single car) cost an average of 1million dollars....and that doesn’t include maintenance. So if you take into consideration the amount of cars that the entire city of NY has and the amount of maintenance that they need to do, then it might make a little more sense on how a mass transit spends so much.
In addition, no public transit system of any major U.S. city has a surplus or makes money whatsoever. This has been the case long before the financial crunch. The fare raise is simply an attempt to level the costs...which almost never happens.
