We received an email from Samia Malik (ihtgw), a young designer who is trying to find some justice in the creative process. Here’s the text in full:
“After much contemplation I’ve decided to write this, mainly working out, that I’m one of the victims who has not much to loose, and also considering that; I don’t hesitate being vocal about uncovering the truth. Here goes:
In 2007 a couple of months before launch of M.I.A’s 2nd album, her brother Sugu contacted me via myspace to work on, design samples for M.I.A’s KALA album merchandise t shirts. I emailed a few samples of my work to Sugu and he liked them, from there I had a meeting with M.I.A. Before meeting started; Sugu asked me to pretend we were mates, as in we hang out together, this was not true at all, because, as I said we met on myspace, only to discuss M.I.A’s merchandise t shirts and there was no friendship beyond that. This was the first indication that things were slightly dodgy. First meeting with M.I.A; she gave me her art work, looked at samples of my design work, explained what she likes and didn’t like. This gave me a good indication of how to work on: design layout and what materials would be best to use for type of design she wanted to achieve.

M.I.A. President Tee shirt
Within a week or two I had all key merchandise samples ready. This all required a good 5 days work week, involving: leg work, buying/ choosing materials, having meetings with printers explaining how the art has to be designed on t shirt, and matching different material with different colour t shirts. On top of this, there was more bits of work, they wanted me to do such as: designing a collection and a few other t shirt prints. After all this was completed, all key samples were sent to M.I.A; she liked the samples.
Next meeting was arranged; by this meeting I had to be straightforward about my freelance rates, as there was no discussion of this at the start. 2nd meeting involved talks about: quote, quantities, t shirt colours, logistics, further design ideas, and also this meeting took over 3 hours. The meeting before this, I was waiting for a good 2 hours and M.I.A didn’t even show up. For me this is serious valuable time, that I can invest in my own work. In 2007 I was working on developing my label, I was not looking to do any work experience, I’ve had my fair share of useful work experience in my late teens and early twenties. In first meeting with M.I.A, I had no idea of exactly what I was expected to do, therefore I had I no time to think about freelance rates, and contracts before hand. By the last meeting I knew; there was no way I could do all this running for scraps, I had bills to pay. I went away put together quotes for; dealing with manufacturing 5000 t shirts. Without any exaggeration, my quotes and freelance rates were fair and realistic. But if M.I.A agreed with my quotes then she would have to sell t shirts on her webstore for an extra £10/£15.
About a month went by; after emailing these quotes, and there was no reply from M.I.A’s team, I thought they didn’t like the samples, and weren’t going to use them. M.I.A launched her webstore in early August 2007, and she was selling t shirts I sampled, technically I had had 50% design rights over those t shirts. I spoke to one of my long term business advisors, who has worked in the fashion industry for atleast 30 years. He was adamant that I take further action; he heard, a very similar story from another designer about MIA.
This was not a simple copy right issue, it was a technical copy right issue, only specialist design lawyers are skilled enough to work on these issues. They understood my case, and agreed that I had rights over each one of those 5000 t shirts. These lawyers cost £400 an hour, there was no way I could afford to hire these lawyers, so I had to put the case on hold.
In the past couples of years I’ve come across similar stories about M.I.A. What triggered me to write this today: recently I found out MIA president T shirts (t shirts I sampled), were her best selling merchandise t shirts. When I first heard this, I laughed it off, but it kept on knocking on my head in past couples of days. Fact there’s no mention ever by MIA that I even worked on designing those t shirts, she could have even given me that much credit. I have tried to discuss above issue with MIA and her team, but there is NEVER no response. A fews months after all this happened in 2007, I received a message on myspace from Afrikan Boy, who said maya and sugu, recommended he contact me for t shirt designs. And no, there was no work with Afrikan Boy; I laid out costs and contracts from the first second and he never replied. THE SHAME!
From all this I learnt it was absolutely vital to layout contracts before any discussion of design work proceeds. Another reason I decided to write this because as humans, we are all responsible for each other; if anyone reads this and passes the word, it might save someone else being used abused victim of MIA and her team.”
[ED - Essentially what it comes down to is that M.I.A.’s brother, Sugu, probably shafted this girl and then pocketed the money. M.I.A.’s folk - a response?]

NAH SUGU nah shafted pocketed money he not like that!
sugu was not only to blame, it involved MIA’s general team and most decision made MIA herself seemed to have the last say
I’m glad you decided to publish this story. I’m a designer and have had work stolen in a similar way. It’s hard to protect yourself in this industry so thank you for encouraging others to stand up for themselves and most importantly establish a contract beforehand.
Designers alike: Do not be fooled by a celebrity name or company you think is legit. If you are passive you will most likely be taken advantage of so protect yourself with a fair contract and demand 1/2 upfront.
I think you are absolutely doing the right thing by letting people know about this. Just because they have power and money it doesn’t mean that it gives them the right to walk all over people. A friend of mine recently started working for Sugu and so far what she’s said about him makes me think there’s something very shady about him. Apparently M.I.A. is his puppet and he calls all the shots. Of course my friend is swayed by all the promises of fortune and fame. He even told her she didn’t have to worry about college anymore because he could “just buy her a degree”. Unfortunately, he was serious. But what does this tell you about his character and morality?
I’m sorry this happened to you, but I’m sure that you will succeed by your own merits without needing anything from these people
First, I just saw MIA at the Virgin Mobile FreeFest, and se was decent, but also kinda out of it, like she was on some kinda drugs. She was making comments that made really no sense. (You can google that, weird stuff)
Second, yeah I am also a designer and you always have to work out that contract stuff at first. The customer may not like it at first and might not hire you, but at least you wont do a bunch of work and not get paid for it. That is a great design you made, and it’s a shame they totally stole it from you!
This is true. My ex-boyfriend was also shafted by Sugu Arul and M.I.A! Sugu dragged him into so many lies. I only met Sugu once or twice, but still I felt something was wrong. They were using my bf as an “intern” supposedly with a promise to hire him full-time. This went on for ages with nothing! I remember something about a dance group he was gonna start but he just needed dancers...LMFAO!!! He was stuck paying for Sugu’s coffee with money he didn’t have! The truth seemed to be that there was nothing Sugu could offer except lies and more pipe dreams. Waaaaak! I wonder if Sugu Arul is even M.I.A.’s brother? He just seemed so unprofessional.
WOW! I am a web designer who was just asked through a friend if I would do work for Sugu Arul’s new label with M.I.A. I guess they are starting it in LA? He said it is called VIIXIIV? There is currently no web page so I started googling Sugu Arul and the label name. THIS CAME UP!!! Good thing I didn’t decide to work on this project. Mainly because I live on the east coast and have much too much paying work. As a designer who is freelance, I hate to see stories like this but at the same time, that is why google is so cool. I wonder if M.I.A. knows her brother did this? Seems typical from celebrity siblings who will do anything to become famous and in the spotlight..... SAD.
I’m not going to give any details, but this also happened to a friend of mine. M.I.A & Sugu are exactly how you described.
... just confirming this blog post to be TRUE.
Sugu is a scam artist. That the only artist he is. He always trying to hit on girls like… “my sis is MIA”...lalal. He tried that on me one night and I straight laughed. He pickin fights with some peeps i know. He knows he betta be watching his step with all that name droppin.
I was friends with a very nice girl that dated sugu once and she was very young, She said he lied to her about his age and many other things. They dated for a long time and even lived together. He ended it with him leaving her on the street with a girl in his car and never saying another word to her. I Think MIA is amazing but her brother is just bad news. I feel sorry for any young girl that gets conned by sugu
I have a different perspective of Mia. Her original website artwork on miauk.com was original and looked like no one elses. A nameless person copied it almost EXACTLY, and from what I understood made a bunch of money off her.
Maybe Sugu asked you to tell Mia you were friends so she would give you a chance because he liked you and wanted her to choose you.
It is your responsibility if you are providing a service to provide prices and a contract up front.
PS Young girl conned by Sugu? What is he, a whopping 23? I feel sorry for any woman of any age conned by any man, or vica versa- yet bottom line we have to protect ourselves.
I dont think its right to paint Sugu in this light, as if he is a predator of women. He’s a young man coming up in a new place- if he wants to flirt with girls, thats his business.
He’s never had any press, charges or anything re: doing anything bad to young women.
As a survivor of abuse, I feel you guys should realize some of the above comments are very serious and very damning. Unless you saw it happen, dont say it. It seems innocent but those accusations can damn a man’s reputation for life.
Thank You
PS If I find out later I’m wrong, I’lll head the lynch mob myself- lol jk But I dont think I am.
ANY WOMAN AS BEAUTIFUL AS MIA CAN BE A POMPOUS SHIESTER IF THEY FEEL LIKE IT. WHEN U THAT PRETTY, ITS OK!!
PS HER TUNES SEEM PRETTY STRAIT UP TO ME
-MIA FAN
I find it hard to believe that MIA asked for outside help re: anything to do with art, drawing, painting, designing.
One day while driving Ms Daisy, a young man stopped my car and said “i’m MIA’s brother”!! I said...."who cares” and drove off. THE END
P.s. He’s 33 years old and he preys on young girls. Him and R Kelly have a Tree house together where they have campfires and ghost stories about being with women their own age.
But seriously EVERYTHING WRITTEN ON HERE IS TRUE! MIA however is not involved in his fuckery. But he is a con artist in every which way imaginable stay away!!!!!!!!!!!
He is such a con he pretended to be squidward for weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even let him stay in my pineapple and lent him 150 clams!!! Then 2 weeks later I saw him wearing a pair of square pants of mine that went missin. It didnt even fit him!! When i confronted him about it he said “These aren’t your pants mate”. I said “Dude I order them specifically for my square torso”. He just jumped on his BMW seahorse and vanished. WHAT AN ASS!!!!!!!!!!
I met Sugu on my home planet of Tattoine. He crashed his BMW racer and needed me and my droids help fixing it. He introduced me to his girl Chewbacca and we started work on my mixtape ‘BITCHES, EWOKS AND LIGHTSABERS’. I gave him my lyrics and then didnt hear from him for months. Then I hear my lyrics on a new VADER track ‘DONT MAKE ME FORCE YOU’. I felt so cheated. Turns out he totally turned to the dark side. I bumped into him in outter space and he was like not only am i MIA’s brother..........I am your father!!!!!!!!! WHAT AN ASS.
Like pretty much everyone else here I have also witnessed the two-headed dragon they call Sugu Arul. I read this article before getting to know him and gave him the benefit of the doubt, because he’s a smooth talker, but the closer you get the more disgusting he is. He is a vile human being. DO NOT WORK WITH HIM!! ESPECIALLY NOT FOR FREE!! He has no respect for anyone and uses talented people to make himself look good. Worthless wanker.

To THE T-SHIRT DESIGNER:
I had some time to think, and I feel so bad that I sided with Sugu over you. He had NO RIGHT to take advantage of your talent or generosity. The fact that he contacted you thru the internet, didnt pay you and refused to stick up for you when trouble went down is both pathetic and disgusting.
When people come to the United States, sometimes American citizens dream they would show respect for talented young women like yourself. I saw those t-shirts, and although I DISAGREE that “Mia” would endorse anything promoting violence- in fact, a friend of mine knows her personally and I know for a fact she is more into feeding children then b-shit talk about bombing anything- BUT THATS BESIDES THE F-IN POINT!!!! You are extremely talented, and I thot those shirts were a multi-million dollar idea. In fact, I wanted to buy one very bad at the time, yet I was strung out on crank and didnt. Now that I am in recovery, I see both that
1.)"Sugu" is possibly an internet predator
2.)If there was any sex involved, or any contact whatsoever between you and him, whether you feel you “wanted” it or not, you were taken advantage of and in this country targeting young women, old women, any women on the Internet period is a federal offense.
3.)As a 36 year old woman, who has many younger female friends, I want to offer you my deepest and most sincere apology for not immediately siding with you on this issue.
I THANK YOU FOR STANDING UP AND BEING AN INTELLIGENT GIRL AND SPEAKING THE TRUTH. YOU HAVE LEGAL GROUND TO SUE THIS PATHETIC INTERNET SCUMBAG.
IF YOU WANT SOME BACK-UP, FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME.
I, too, was a dumb m-fer who fell for him because he is a good looking guy and seemed articulate and intelligent. If he touched you at all, honestly, in my “white Christian” religion, he would most likely unless he changed his ways burn in hell.
GOOD 4 U HONEY!!!! You speaking out empowered me, and I’m sure many other young women everywhere.
(Damn, there’s another ‘dude’ I have no respect 4- peace ‘lil one!!!!!)
I will just come out and say it I feel like an idiot for even commenting on people i dont know personally sorry for saying “burn in hell” what a hateful comment
this must be why celebs fear their fans
-sorry to everyone -m.sands
I run a design studio in Los Angeles and we made the terrible mistake of doing some work for Sugu and MIA’s record label NEET a while back. They have no respect for other people’s time and talent. Luckily, we realized it pretty quickly and quit after the first project. In the end, we did get paid for at least a fraction of our time… but not without having to push for it.
I would say BEWARE to any designer who goes near that team. Ask for a 50% retainer up front before you do any work… and then, be prepared to be disrespected.
