You have probably seen New York based photographer Flora Hanitijo’s work at some point, as her work has been featured in prominent publications, including W magazine, I.D, Surface, amongst others.

Hanitijo has had some big faces pose for her lens, including Arcade Fire and Emma Stone. This Friday, Hanitijo will offer a completely different experience of her work with a deeply personal collection of photographs in While You Were Sleeping.

These photos are a result of Hanitijo’s ‘[obsession] with collecting, capturing, remembering, and preserving the minutia of every day life.’ According to Hanitijo, ‘these preserved instances of unremarkable moments and places mirror [her] everyday joys, struggles and disquiet.’ The calm, mundane scenes in While You Were Sleeping elicit moments of sadness, forsakenness at times, and also, nostalgia. According to Hanitijo: ‘It is my way of preserving my thoughts and stirring memories of days gone. These are the days while you were sleeping and I was awake.’ While You Were Sleeping is on view until the end of April at Primary Photographic.
